Women who Shook the World: Anna Freud (December 3, 1895 – October 9, 1982)

Her father's daughter

Freud's daughter not only continued and developed his work, but also left her own mark in science – of global importance...

Oh, how he wanted another son, this Sigmund! But a daughter was born. Disappointed, Freud wrote to a doctor friend, V. Fliss: "If I had a son, I would send you a telegram..." But the only information about the sixth child in 8 years was that the girl was healthy and had not harmed her mother during childbirth. But as often happens, the daughter fulfilled the hopes that the father had placed on the desired son.

Together with my father

She had no higher education, only a private school and her father. Since the age of 13, Anna has been a regular participant in meetings of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society, attended sessions led by Freud. Psychoanalysis became her passion for life. Ordinary appearance, the absence of a husband, children – all this did not make Anna unhappy. She had fans in her youth. When she was sent to England in 1914, she was cared for by the famous psychoanalyst E. Jones. But Anna returned to Vienna, to her father. She tolerated his difficult character, allowed him to psychoanalyze himself (in science, this is forbidden between loved ones). And when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1923, she also became his nurse (and Freud lived and worked for another 16 years). For the Nazis, Freud was just a Jew, his books were burned, and in 1938 the family had to flee Vienna to England in order not to repeat the fate of their books. Anna never forgave and never came to Germany, although she traveled all over the world thanks to her outstanding scientific work. And even at the Vienna Psycho-Analytical Congress in 1971, she spoke in English.

A name in science

According to her, she has worked with children all her life. At first, she worked with her friend's children, and in 1939 she opened an orphanage for war orphans. In 1952, in London, she founded the Hampstead Children's Treatment and Training Center for the Rehabilitation of children through psychoanalysis (now it bears her name). Anna Freud is the mother of child psychoanalysis. To find a common language with young patients (unlike adults, children do not go to the session on their own), she played their games, talked about topics they suggested (from the adventures of sea pirates and geographical information to stamp collections and love stories). I also observed that children don't express their feelings in words. She became famous as an outstanding scientist, an eternal worker (despite severe lung disease since 1945). She did not stop working even after a stroke (March 1982). Semi-paralyzed, she continued to work on a book on family law until her last days.
